A pioneer in the field of tribology in Nigeria, he established the country’s first Tribology Laboratory at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Port Harcourt—now Rivers State University—where he was appointed Professor of Mechanical Engineering in 1990. Prof. Odi-Owei has a rich academic legacy, widely published in leading international journals, and actively involved in professional societies. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, the Nigerian Academy of Engineering, the African Academy of Sciences, and the Institution of Diagnostic Engineers, UK. He is also a Life Member of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Foundation President of the Tribology Society of Nigeria, and a member of the Guild of Tribologists, International Tribology Congress, Poland. He is a registered engineer with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN). His academic excellence has earned him numerous research fellowships, including those from UNESCO, the Royal Society–Nuffield Foundation (UK), and NUFFIC (The Netherlands). At RSUST, Prof. Odi-Owei served with distinction in various leadership roles: Head of Department, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Chairman of the Committee of Deans, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (1995–1996), and ultimately Vice-Chancellor (1996–2000). Beyond RSUST, he held visiting and research positions at the University of Wales, Swansea, UK; Delft Technical University, The Netherlands; the University of Essex, UK; the University of Port Harcourt; and Niger Delta University. In recognition of his outstanding service and academic legacy, Rivers State University conferred on him the title of Emeritus Professor of Mechanical Engineering in 2015. Having vast experience in University Administration and Corporate Governance, Prof. Odi-Owei was appointed a member of the Governing Council of Caleb University from 2008-2021. He was also appointed the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council of Anchor University, Lagos, a position he held from 2021 till 2025. He is currently the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council of the Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Amasoma, Bayelsa State. Beyond academia, Prof. Odi-Owei has contributed to corporate governance. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Century Energy Services Ltd, Lagos, and is currently a Non-Executive Director at Eraskon Nigeria Ltd. Originally from Kaiama in Kolokuma-Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, Nigeria, Professor Odi-Owei is a committed family man, married to Mrs. Vivian Abiodun Odi-Owei, with many children. He is also a devoted Christian and serves as a Group Pastor at the Deeper Life Bible Church in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
